Hills: Beinn Odhar Mhor, Beinn Odhar Bheag and Beinn Mhic Cedidh Date: Saturday 9th April 2011 Company: Just myself Time: 5Hrs 45Mins I wasn't planning to walk today, however, when MWIS suggest – no rain, extensive sunshine and >90% cloud-free Munros heading for the hills is a must. I started walking quite late today, around 10:45. Click here to see a map of the route undertaken After crossing the railway line, I followed a faint track towards Beinn Odhar Mhor. Beinn Odhar Mhor from start of walk:  Lower slopes of Beinn Odhar Mhor:  Once the faint path disappeared, I made my way up the wide ridge heading towards Coire Choin Duinn. Ascent of Beinn Odhar Mhor:  Looking back towards start:  All the surrounding hills were clear of cloud today but unfortunately it was quite hazy. Even Ben Nevis was clear of cloud all day. View towards Rum:  Beinn Odhar Mhor:  Hills North of Glenfinnan:  The ascent as far as the summit of Beinn Odhar Mhor was quite straight-forward. Summit of Beinn Odhar Mhor:  The traverse across to Beinn Odhar Bheag was a bit more complex. Fine in good visibility but I don't think I would want to do these hills in clag. Looking towards Beinn Odhar Bheag from Beinn Odhar Mhor:  Loch Shiel and Loch Eil:  Glenfinnan:  Heading for Beinn Odhar Bheag:  I thought the topography of Beinn Odhar Bheag was quite interesting. View from summit of Beinn Odhar Bheag:  Looking back to Beinn Odhar Mhor from summit of Beinn Odhar Bheag:  Loch Shiel (South):  Loch Shiel (North):  Looking across Loch Shiel to Sgurr Ghiubhsachain:  From Beinn Odhar Bheag, I made my way towards Beinn Mhic Cedidh. Descent towards Beinn Mhic Cedidh:  The ascent of Beinn Mhic Cedidh from the col was up steep grass slopes. Beinn Mhic Cedidh from bealach:  Looking back to Beinn Odhar Mhor and Beinn Odhar Bheag:  Approaching summit of Beinn Mhic Cedidh:  The view across to the Rois-Bheinn hills from the summit was really nice. Summit of Beinn Mhic Cedidh:  Rois-Bheinn hills:  I found the descent from Beinn Mhic Cedidh to be quite complex. Again easy enough in good visibility but a potential nightmare in mist. Descent from Beinn Mhic Cedidh:  Descent from Beinn Mhic Cedidh:  Descent from Beinn Mhic Cedidh:  Stripy rocks:  I wasn't 100% sure of the normal route off the hill so I just made up a route taking what I thought was the easiest descent. I eventually reached a vehicle track which I followed down to the railway line and out to the road. Vehicle track:  Descending vehicle track towards Loch Eilt:  Beinn Odhar Mhor, Beinn Odhar Bheag and Beinn Mhic Cedidh:  Bridge over Allt a'Choire Bhuidhe:  Tunnel under railway line:  Following the track alongside Loch Eilt:  A short walk along the road got me back to the starting point. First sunburn of the year! 6 Corbetts to go, so final one will need to be one of the following: - Sgurr Gaorsaic - Aonach Buidhe - Faochaig - Bidein a'Chabair - Beinn a'Chasgein Mor - Garbh Bheinn (Ardgour) |
